Ms. Mae's
About This Spot
Stepping into Ms. Mae’s on Magazine Street is like slipping into a well-worn pair of shoes — comfortable, familiar, and unpretentious. This dive bar hums with an easygoing rhythm that invites you to settle in without fuss. Neon lights cast a warm pinkish glow, blending with the chatter and laughter that spills from both inside and the picnic tables outside. It’s a spot where the pulse of the neighborhood feels alive but never overwhelming.
The crowd here is a mix of longtime locals and newcomers, drawn by the simplicity of honest drinks and the casual, no-frills atmosphere. Ms. Mae’s isn’t about polish or pretension; it’s about connection through shared moments, whether leaning on the bar, challenging a stranger to air hockey, or swapping stories over a cold beer. Cash-only adds to the old-school charm, encouraging patrons to slow down and enjoy each sip without distraction.
Beyond the bar’s welcoming vibe, there’s a quietly proud dedication to satisfying hunger with straightforward, hearty fare. The kitchen turns out tacos, burritos, and seafood boils that mirror the lively spirit of the place—perfect for late-night cravings or accompanying a round of Hurricanes and Radlers. It’s the kind of spot where your food feels just as familiar and comforting as the company.
Ms. Mae’s captures a slice of New Orleans life that’s genuine and grounded. It’s a neighborhood haunt where the music of everyday moments—shared drinks, friendly banter, and the clack of an air hockey puck—creates a quietly joyful backdrop. Here, the atmosphere isn’t staged but lived, making it a place worth returning to again and again.

One day, in the past,... the "male" bartender, stopped serving me, and "IGNORED" me... when I tried to order a drink. When I inquired about his behavior, he said that I wasn't "TIPPING",... while he continued to IGNORE me, and not serve me. When I asked for a MANAGER, he took it as a THREAT,... ... told me to "LEAVE", or he would call the POLICE, and when I didn't leave,... until the POLICE came... ... took my PHOTO, on his phone... Subsequently, I've been "BANNED", SINCE... - Two (2), to three (3) months ago... "FOR NOT TIPPING, HIM...!". I'm on a "FIXED INCOME", a U.S. MILITARY VETERAN,...New to New Orleans, Louisiana, and am waiting for HOUSING...(BASICALLY, HOMELESS...), with things on my mind... ...and without a "DAYTIME" PLACE, to get out of the HEAT, the WEATHER, and to gather my thoughts... "BANNED", ... for "NOT TIPPING",... ... without being "DRUNK", nor "DISORDERLY"... ..."PERMANENTLY"...!!!? George Mathis, NOLA, 07/30/2023.

DIVE BAR. Cheap drinks and neon pink lighting. Perfect hangout place to drink with friends and to make some new friends. The place is really chill. Cash only bar. Seating available indoors and outdoors. We settled on the plastic picnic table outside. My friend started conversations with locals and another friend bummed a cig off another dude because beer and smoking apparently is his thing. Otherwise, the air outside was nice and we all just chilled and vibed there after dinner.

Classic Dive Bar Done Right Ms. Mae’s is everything you want in a great dive bar — no frills, no fuss, just strong drinks and a laid-back vibe. It’s cash-only, so come prepared, but the prices are more than fair and the atmosphere is unbeatable if you’re looking for something real and unpretentious. It’s the kind of place where you can grab a cheap drink, relax, and just enjoy the scene — nothing fancy, just good times. A true New Orleans classic that keeps it simple and does it right.

Good drinks, prices, and people. Friends and I hang out and get food outside, play air hockey and pool, have fun. Heather and Damien make the best food, hands down, to sate that late night food urge. Veggie, chicken, shredded beef, fish, shrimp, pork, steak, and more. Tacos, burritos, nachos, and quesadillas.
